IAGS Conferences
IAGS will hold its fourteenth meeting in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, July 14-19, 2019, on the campus of American University of Phnom Penh (AUPP). The conference is jointly hosted by AUPP’s Center for Southeast Asian Studies and Rutgers University’s Center for the Study of Genocide and Human Rights.
The conference theme as expressed in the event’s title is “The Missing Picture”: Rethinking Genocide Studies and Prevention. The Call for Papers is online as well as the official conference website.
2019 marks the 40th anniversary of the fall of Cambodia’s genocidal Khmer Rouge regime, making the timing and location of the conference all the more significant. In addition, the conference marks the association’s 25th anniversary and will be its first conference in Asia, extending efforts to diversify prevailing understandings of the experience of genocide, and steps we can take to recover and learn from it.
The 2019 IAGS conference is open to any whose work connects with the study of genocide, and it embraces a wide range of disciplines and approaches. The conference aims to highlight sessions and papers making use of alternative delivery formats, most especially presentations seeking to break new ground on the widest possible variety of cases, concepts, theories, methods, practices and topics relevant to the study of genocide, genocide education, and prevention. Established and emerging scholars, as well as those working specifically in/on genocide in Southeast Asia, are highly encouraged to consider submitting proposals. The conference is open to all interested academics, professionals, artists, survivors, activists, government officials, practitioners, and students.
Please watch the listserv, FaceBook, and the IAGS website for future announcements and more details concerning the conference site, theme, special events, and planned excursions.
We look forward to seeing you all in Cambodia in 2019.
Yours sincerely,
Dr. Henry C. Theriault
IAGS President
Dr. Adam Muller
IAGS First Vice-President
